3 Tbsp. ammonia
3 Tbsp. cold water
1 Tbsp. liquid bluing
2 Tbsp. salt
food colouring
shallow glass dish
pieces of coal, charcoal, broken brick or porous rock
vaseline

Grease rim of dish with vaseline to prevent growth over lip of bowl. Arrange coal in dish piling them on each other to make a jumbled surface. Mix together ammonia, water, bluing and salt. Spoon this mixture over the pieces, allowing the solution to cover the bottom of the container.

Drop one or two food colours over the top pieces letting colour dribble down the sides. Use only a few drops.

Set the garden where it won't need to be moved. The growing crystals are fragile and work best if left alone. Every second day add 1 Tbsp water and 1 tsp salt to garden without disturbing the crystal formation. Each day you will see a change as the crystals grow and multiply.
